The Sugar Dust Kitchen

Cakes & Pie

Today I baked two Christmas cakes for a person at work who had ordered them.  Unfortunately I’m running out of time to get mine done! It’s just so time consuming! The smell in the kitchen from these was amazing.  After the cakes were baked, I made us a nice pie for dinner.  The pie had chicken, peas, carrots, parsnips, celery, onions, stock, seasoning and cream in it.  Yum!  The picture is a bit rubbish because I took it on my phone.

Chocoholics Birthday Cake!!!

I was asked to make a cake for a 21st birthday.  This cake consists of chocolate sponge with layers of white chocolate buttercream and chocolate fondant icing.  Doing this cake was completely out of my comfort zone.  I have never done a chocolate birthday cake before.  I found the chocolate fondant icing really hard to work with but, I got there in the end.

This cake is so incredibly rich and delicious! Only a small piece is needed!  I decided to decorate the cake with this in mind! It looks VERY chocolatey! Its completely over the top and I’ve loved making it.  The recipient was very pleased with it too!

I have saved the cuttings off this cake and frozen them.  At a later stage I will make up some more white chocolate buttercream and use the mixture to make my reindeer cake pops this Christmas.

More Birthday Cupcakes

A colleague from work asked if I could make her some birthday cupcakes – 24 to take into work and 12 for her family.  I made 12 lemon, 12 vanilla and 12 chocolate.  I made some miniature chocolate bars to go on the chocolate ones, I’m quite pleased with the effect.

I haven’t made lemon cakes in a while and had forgotten how much I love them!! I made two extra and packaged one up nicely to give to my Mum when I met her for lunch the following day.  She phoned me in the evening to complain – that one wasn’t enough! She said they were so nice she wanted more!!!

I got some good comments from people at work about these cakes and it made me very happy.  One lady said I’m her new hero!

Wedding Cake Samples…

Out of all of the cakes I have made so far, I have enjoyed doing these the most.  I put my heart and soul into these and I am so proud that I was able to achieve what I have. Making these this weekend has made me realise that I would love to do this full time as a job.  There is a huge market for cupcakes and as far as I’m aware, no where here does specialist tailored cupcakes similar to these.

The bride and groom to be were so very pleased with these and have chosen the ones they would like.  I am pleased with their decision as the ones they have chosen were my favourites and I loved making them.  The bride sent me an email last night and gave me so many amazing compliments.

It’s so nice to finally feel that I’m good at something and can do nice things for people like this to make them happy.

If you click on the picture to make it full size then you can see some of the details more clearly.

Lots of Ladybirds!

My friends little boy loves ladybirds so I made these for him for his party.  I coloured the buttercream with a red paste and made a separate batch of black icing for the spots.  I topped each of them with a sugar paste ladybird.  He was very pleased!

More Mr Men!

A colleagues wife contacted me as she had seen my Mr Men cakes on face book and thought it would be fun to get him some for his birthday. She also ordered a separate box of six cupcakes.

A Treat From The Mother In Law

My mother in law decided to treat her work colleagues to some cakes as it was her birthday recently.

I made coloured, swirled icing for the first time and was really pleased with how it turned out. I think it is very effective.  My Mother in Law was very pleased with these and her work colleagues really enjoyed them.

Apologies for the picture, it’s a bit blurry –  I had my camera on the wrong setting!

Shrek & Fiona

A friend of a friend asked me to make her little girls birthday cake.  She wanted a picture of Shrek and Fiona which I had printed locally.

I decorated this with fondant which I measured and cut to size before twisting and using around the base.  I then put bows on the sides and pearl centred diamond shapes as a border around the picture.  I finished it off with a pink spotty ribbon and a sprinkle of glitter.

Tractor!!!

My lovely little nephew Ethan loves Tractors! So, I made him this birthday cake.  I used my usual recipe for birthday cakes.  He loved it.

I decorated this with black and red coloured fondant icing, a length of black ribbon and a thinner length of red ribbon. I used a crimper tool for the first time, I quite like the effect it gives.

Cake Pop!

I had been wanting to make these for a while and had some cake cuttings left over from a birthday cake.  I made these with vanilla sponge and vanilla buttercream and coated them in dark chocolate (it was all I had in the cupboard!).

My husband tested these and he loved them.  I’m going to be making them again to sell at work for Children In Need this coming Friday.
